Australia, NSW, Ettalong: Errol's Barbershop
Located 60 miles/100kms from Sydney in a beach and holiday resort, opposite Ettalong Memorial Club. Open weekdays 8am to 5pm : Saturday 8am to 12 Noon. An added bonus is Earl will make house

Errol Baker the Barber is a young family man. It's not unusual to see his small children around. He is personally redecorating his shop in the style, so he says, of an olde worlde Australian Sheep
Sheering Shed. The shop is also a show-and-sales-room for angling gear. If you're into fish tales at haircut time, Errol is your expert. He is Craftsman of the Clippers, Superman of the Scissors, skilled in all kinds of
men's hairstyles. With a Producer associate he is in the process of designing, photographing and compiling a Cuts Catalogue, Styles Directory, and Tonsurial Tutorial Videos. Not only will this be a collection of
specially prepared popular and classic haircuts, but it will include up-to-the-minute trends, and some on the wild side, mohawks, geometrics through to shaved; all cuttable on request. Errol is one of the few who still
does a super smooth head shave; freshly whipped up shaving cream in an old fashioned shaving mug, natural soft bristle brush, straight 'cutthroat' razor; the lot. And then he finishes off with Ice Shampoo. Wow! "To
be, or not to be?" He's trying to talk himself into the BALD look. This Barbershop is not expensive - cheaper than most. Errol the Barber is reinventing his salon, and will reinvent a great haircut for you from the Cuts
Catalogue or your own Custom Coiffeur!

CA, Fair Oaks: Super Barbers
This is a very clean, modern suburban barbershop. No old fashioned accoutrements other than the standard pictures of haircuts on the wall (you know, the rows of black and whites you point to when you don't know the
name of a particular haircut).

parking meter. The neighborhood has restricted parking. Reviewed by: Crewcut111@yahoo.com
CA, Solana Beach: Solana Beach Barber Shop
Member Steve (colt68@earthlink.net) reports: located at 135 South Hwy 101. If you are coming up from San Diego, take the Lomos Santa Fe exit and turn left on Hwy 101 and it's on the right side of the Hwy. The
shop was crowded even though it was a Wednesday afternoon around 3pm. It looked like an old fashioned shop. There were six barbers all of whom were giving fairly short cuts. I already had a #1 on top with a #3
bumper and somewhat grown out #00 on sides and back. I asked for a taper up to the crown. The barber took his time and did a great job. He finished the cut with a lathered shave around the ears and at the nape.
He charged $12 which isn't all that bad for a resort community. On a scale of 1-10 this was a 10. Hope this helps anyone in the San Diego area.
CA, Walnut Creek: Maureene's Barbering for Men
1339 Pine Street #C, phone: (925) 934-2002 Member Mike reports: This a very traditional barbershop setting with vintage furnishings (maybe early 60's). It is a one barber shop with Maureene doing all the cutting. I had
been growing my hair out so it was a bit shaggy when I asked her to neaten it up a bit. She took off a lot more than I expected, but the haircut was great (a medium businessman's). She uses a traditional clippers over
comb technique with the Oster 76's and is not shy about cutting with them. I dropped a hint about my Summer flattop coming soon and she said, enthusiastically, she loves to do them. If you like a ladies touch this is
a great place!
CA, West Hollywood: Blades

hair."

IL, Chicago: Alfred's Antiques
1958 West Superior Street, phone: (312) 850-4842. [Newsclip from 'Best of Chicago' issue of NewCity weekly 28-SEP-00, p. 56; www.newcity.com. Submitted by Mens Hair member ShortSuave] Hair care and used
furniture, too. At this messy, dark and dusty Ukrainian Village combo establishment, Alfred cuts hair while his wife pushes choice hunks of junk onto the sidewalk for display. Some days, a sweating Coors Light can
sits next to Alfred's sink; when the Coors Light is not there, the haircuts are military short. Barbershop philosophy flows freely. "Every day here is different," says the 55-year-old Alfred in response to a question about
the rapidly gentrifying neighborhood that will likely eventually put him out of business (his building is already for sale). "But then, I change, too. I can feel myself changing every day." No matter: This third-rate antique
shop offers a first-rate haircut that includes the added benefits of after-shave lotion, shaving cream and a straight razor, all in about thirty minutes. Cost: $8, $10 or $12, plus an enthusiastic $5 tip.
IL, Chicago: Eber's Barber Shop
7458 N. Western Ave, phone: 312-764-4712. Eber is the barber of choice, from Russia with tremendous experience in all clipper styles including military styles up to his specialty, the shaved head with razor! He is
also stunning with any other business hair cut. Takes pride in his work, does not rush and triple checks the results. The old fashioned way is still around, topped off with a shoulder vibrator massage. Call ahead,
although no appointments necessary, since he may not work every day of the week.
IL, Chicago: Frank's Barber Shop
56 W. Van Buren [in Chicago's Loop] on the ground floor of the historic Monadnock Building. The Frank Yonder, owner, has many mementos and antiques including a 1927 Wildwood shaving mug and a 1903 liquid
"Hair Restorative" that promised to grow hair, and wooden barber poles hang throughout the shop.
IL, Chicago: Gabby's Barbershop

IL, Chicago: Medinah Barber Shop
3 E. Huron Street. Phone: (312) 944-1549 Barbers, many of them ancestors of the present owner, Ronald Edwards, have been plying their trade on the same site since 1893. The barber is great and attentive. Best of
all, at the end of the cut, he'll ask if you'll "want anything on it". He has tonics, gels, etc. Just ask for tonic with oil and you'll be treated to having your fresh haircut finished off as it should be - neat and slicked. The
massaging in of hairtonic, with the aroma wafting around, is so relaxing you can feel all the stress of the day just evaportate. Reviewed by get_the_wet_look@yahoo.com.
IL, Chicago: Timeout at Shannon's Barbershop
689 North Milwaukee, phone: (312) 997-9909 From Best of Chicago 2002 issue - 26SEP02 Maybe it's the location. Maybe it's the always-clean decor. Maybe it's the fact that they don't take walk-ins (unheard
of for barbershops). Or maybe it's the fact that the Wall Street Journal recognized this Chicago hotbed before the Sun-Times or the Tribune, but there is not a barbershop in the city (in the country for that matter)
comparable to the basketball hall-of-fame called Timeout at Shannon's.
Unlike the typical in-the-'hood, black-fade givers that have become the black man's country club over several generations, Timeout
at Shannon's is what other shops need to become when they grow up. NBA-styled lockers and chairs, old classic games on heavy rotation playing behind the backdrop of the latest beats by Dr. Dre or Kanye West,
provide the backdrop for conversations ranging and escalating from Shaq's big toe to Biggie's involvement in Tupac's murder to the priests in the Catholic Church.
Several companies (including Nike and
Andi) have expressed interest in buying (or becoming partners in) the shop from owner Shannon Jones. But he refuses to sell. Corporations don't create legacies, people do.

appointment only. The guy is very friendly and managed to coax one member into having all his thick shoulder length hair buzzed off. He's very gentle too, and gently guides your head into the position he wants. His
touch sends the blood flowing to all the right places.
IL, Lisle: Main St. Hair Co.

The following is an interview with Bernie Feldberg owner, which ran in the Chicago Tribune, Jobs Section, April 16, 2000
You are a
traditional barber and not a stylist. Why?
Well, back when I started, you either went to barber school or beauty school. When I got out of high school, I said, "I don't like to work with hair spray." So I went to
barber school. There are only a couple of barber schools left today in the Chicago area. Back in the old days, there were a lot of barber schools on Madison Street -- our clients were the bums from Madison Street. I
went to Modern Barber college. I went for 12 months. At that time yo had to put in 1,200 hours in school. Then, you took a test to get your license. You had to give a haircut and a shave in front of different people
who worked for the state. You also had to take a written test about the body and diseases of the scalp.
No one is going into barbering today because it is not worth it. We are a dying breed. When my
two partners here, Dave and Vince, retire, we'll close the shop and that will be it. In 10 years I don't think there will be any traditional barber shops anymore.
What happened to the barber
business?
In the 1960s during the Beatles era no one wanted haircuts anymore. I even started to do some styling when I was at Sid's. I'd be in the back with the hair dryer and hair spray and they called me
"Fabulous Bernardo." The styling really got big a few years later. People had longer hair and most of the barbers left the profession, including myself. I went into the carpet and tile business for the next 25 years.
When I retired from that a few years ago, my wife said, "Why don't you go back to cutting hair?"
Do you perform both shaves and haircuts?
We are still some of the only barbers who
shave (as part of a haircut). We put hot lather around the ears and the back of the neck. Most barbers use electric clippers around the ears. Hardly anyone comes in for a regular shave. Since we don't want to fool
around with anything that might have to do with blood, we use injector blades. I can then throw the blade out and put a new one in.
My partners and I can do things that stylists can't do. We can do
razor cuts. We can even singe the hair with a wick to get rid of split ends.
What's the best thing about the job?
The best thing is that there is no pressure. We don't take any appointments, we
just take walk-ins. And, what is the difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut? Just two weeks. Also, you meet people from all walks of life. We have our own little camaraderie. We talk about camping
and fishing. About half of our customers are retired. For the little kids, we talk about what they want to do and about how it is important to stay in school.
IL, Oak Park: Lester's Barbershop & Beauty Salon
6340 Roosevelt Road, phone: 708-386-9700. Formally Walter's Barbershop. Walter sold the business to Lester - one of the barbers who has worked with Walter for years. Lester completely remodeled the shop,
adding a Beauty Salon. He now has new barber/stylists (men and women) who he's been training in the art of Barbering. The new barber/stylists still use clippers. I kinda miss the traditional barbershop look that this
shop once had, but I guess that's progress. The addition of the Beauty Shop is an attempt to be more UNISEX. Reviewed by get_the_wet_look@yahoo.com
IL, Wheaton: Kings' Barbershop
128 W Willow Ave, phone: 630-668-4300. They have about 8 barbers - chairs constantly busy especially after 3pm. You often have to "take a number". If you call ahead you can make an appointment with a specific
barber, otherwise it's first come first served. The clientele varies in age from little kids, to teens, college guys, 30 & 40 some things, and older. They all have experience with precision haircutting techniques as well as
traditional clipper action. They give great crews and flattops. The barber chairs are positioned along the west and east walls and the waiting chairs are positioned in the middle of the shop one side facing west, and
the other east so no matter where you sit you'll be able to watch some haircut action.

LA, New Orleans: Palmer's

kids, no new customers, however, if you have a great head of hair that needs cutting, you'll be let in (the door is always locked). Probably the best military style cutter in town, including the ones on the Navy bases.
Note to literary and film buffs, 635 Elysian Fields is the fictional location of Tennessee Williams Brick (Brando in the movie) from Streetcar Named Desire. The bus named Desire passes by the

NJ, Keyport: Boro Barber Shop
72 Broad St., Phone: 908-739-0449. An old fashioned barber shop with a twist. Two chairs in the front section manned by older no nonsense barbers, and a back section manned by 2 women hair stylists. The main
action is always in the barber section. Al has the chair on the right and John has the chair on the left. John does an excellent high and tight flattop, always taking his time. Al is famous for cutting it shorter than you
want, some say they think he enjoys it. Both are pros at any short cut imaginable, and you never feel like you are being rushed. And don't forget to ask for a shave from Al. His precise steady hands will give you the
smoothest crisp shave possible.
On any given day, you may be watching a cop get his high and tight redone, a football team member having his head shaved, or a business man getting his straight
laced hair buzzed. Lots of clipper action for the young and old alike.

OH, Alliance: Collins Barbershop
131 W State St., phone: (330) 823-1975. Took in a pix of my favorite H-N-T (with landing strip). He told me no problem. Sat right down and he got busy. All caped up after he mowed down my sides and back, he spun
me around and I got to see the top go down!. Yes, what a feeling. I asked if he would razor shave the sides and back and he does. I haven't got goose bumps in such a long time. It was kind of cool out that day and the
feeling of the hot lather was great. Sides, back and even landing strip shaved nice and smooth.
He uses the clipper with the vac attached. I did miss seeing my hair fall upon the cape, but the vac made
it cool and sent the first wave of goose bumps. Man, what a feeling!!!
I would HIGHLY recommend to all those around here go give Mike a try. You will not be disappointed. And if there are any H-N-T
